The Basics of Online Reputation Management

In a world dominated by Google, Yelp and Yahoo, it doesn’t matter what you say about your brand. The real deal breaker is what your consumers are saying on social media and objective review sites.

Online reputation management (ORM) is absolutely essential to the modern business for this very reason. If you aren’t managing your reputation, you’re allowing yourself to be controlled by it. There’s no “opt-in” for the process. You either take the reins of your brand or watch the rest of the world do it for you.

So what can you do to get started in ORM?

Utilize SEO. Another important acronym, SEO stands for search engine optimization, and it will make or break your website on Google. The good news for the unfamiliar is that you can outsource the whole process by hiring a company with SEO optimization services.

Manage your online profile. If you aren’t already a member of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, now is the time to join. You want your own company-controlled results to appear before any unauthorized sources.

Bury the dirt. If you’ve received unflattering reviews, it can be difficult or even impossible to get them removed by third-party websites. You can, however, employ a variety of tricks to make them disappear under a flood of positive information.

If you’re serious about raising and maintaining top-tier brand awareness in a digital world, it’s time to dip your toe into the waters of online reputation management. It could quite honestly be the difference between the success and failure of your business.

  • It’s nice to read articles about online management. I also read about Identity theft today. It is such a big problem and the threat of identity theft is on the rise in wake of global financial crisis. So I decided to get a lifelock protection.

  • Hi Vishal
Very nice post! Your reputation is everything. Basically, online reputation management is the process of controlling what shows up when someone Googles your name. Online reputation management is probably the most critical element in any business at the moment, with the proliferation of social media sites and the time of everyone’s voice being heard. At present, in the modern world of marketing and promotion, every professional entrepreneur might think that whether the on-line reputation matters for their business or not and how to improve online reputation; It is one of the most significant and common factors which the prospective clients require to deal with a company they rely upon.
Offering quality content and maintaining quality email newsletter are two extremely effective ways to protect brand.
Always bear in mind that whatever information you share on the Internet will remain there. It could also spread fast if you’re not careful enough. Hence, you have to make sure that only the positive feedback will prevail on the Web, and you should immediately prevent false claims from spreading.

Nice work Vishal, thanks for sharing this awesome post with us.

  • Managing your online reputation can sometimes be hard, but if you keep everything private (facebook, twiitter, etc) you shouldn’t have that much difficulty.

  • Nice article and nice information you have posted Vishal. Online Reputation Management is a process to remove negative comments and reviews about an individual or a brand. Social Media is a good source of maintaining online reputation if used effectively. Thanks.

  • Too often we assume that the Internet shows one’s true colours. Well, sadly that is not completely true. I personally know a so-called businessman who fails to pay his employers, treats them like hell and often ignores its clients’ wishes. But he is a real master of SEO tricks and manages to bury down most of the negative feedback that is posted online about his business.

I am not saying that these SEO techniques are bad by themselves, I’m just saying that they are not good nor evil, and knowing them, doesn’t make you a fine businessman or a wonderful person, but only a very well skilled one. That’s all. Doing SEO is good, being a real man is best! The results will follow in a flash light.
